All too often you're favorite band breaks up and you're left with music that you have so much emotion connected to, but never again or ever at all will you experience it live. usually dedicated fans will follow members of the disbanded group to see what they will create next; all with a hope it will resemble what drew the listener to the original group in the first place. Most the of the time the sound if totally different and doesn't go anyway or sounds generally bad and doesn't last long.
Well for fans of the punk band Tsunami Bomb, this is not the case. The band did in fact break up a few years back but now Emily Whitehurst is back with the Action Design. The band isn't quite punk as her former band, but very good and bouncy beats that make you want to jump and scream with her.
Tonight the Action Design paid Denver a visit to one of the many hole-in-the-wall bars Denver has to offer. This one happened to be 3 Kings Tavern on Broadway. There were two openers before the action design. I caught a few minutes of one of them and i just couldn't take it. They just weren't good. They were local and brought a decent crowd of people but just wasn't into it.
There wasn't more than 40 people in the bar watching The Action Design inside that tiny bar, but it didn't matter. Emily's raw energy and catchy lyrics brought people in from outside and pulled attention away from one's drink to take notice. Starting at 11pm and playing 42 minutes, it was a perfect show. this writer found herself begging for more after the last song, "landmines" was finished. They should have headlined or gotten a whole hour.
Emily commented about drinking a cup of coffee before she took the stage and how much it helped. well Emily, it truly showed with the jumping, dancing while singing and playing keyboard all at the same time. The energy was so thick in the room from the music and from the energetic antics of Emily throughout the set.
truly worth the 5 dollars to get in. The staff was super helpful and nice and gave me a poster to have Emily sign. Emily is very nice and rather comical. if The action Design ever rolls through your town spend the few bucks and go see them. their cd, "Say Never" is worth every penny as well. Has a sound very Similar to Pretty Girls Makes Graves. Yet another great band that has disbanded.
So not all break-ups leave you sand and jipped by the replacement band the members have created. Some can even be better. In this writer's personal opinion, The Action design is a much better band than Tsunami Bomb. Both are great but THD is more concrete with their sound.
